How many of us are there?

The stereotype of a vegetarian is either an animal-rights advocate or a health nut. But although I did have some health reasons for going vegetarian (meat gives my body an uncomfortable, slow, sluggish, heavy feeling), my primary reason was environmental: the wastefulness of putting 10 pounds of feed into producing one pound of meat. The huge amounts of methane emissions and toxic manure. The depletion of fisheries worldwide. The conversion of rainforests into pastures.

Those of us who went vegetarian for these reasons are very much under the radar; the animal-rights and health arguments are the ones the public hears most often. Is it just because they are more vocal than we? How can we raise public awareness of these issues?

Live was I ere I saw evil I went vegetarian and later vegan because I have a strong sense of justice and when I became aware of the needlessness and injustice of making animals suffer just so that disgusting, gluttonous humans could satisfy their selfish urges it immediately told my conscience that I had to change and drastically. I'm sorry that somebody somewhere might lose their beach house with the rising sea levels but that pales in comparison for the sympathy I have for innocent creatures that are suffering daily at the hands of Man.
