Its just offensive, people who eat fish and other creatures from the sea claiming they are vegetarian, and I think its a growing trend still =\
I don't understand why fish eaters have their own groups. They are not vegetarian, why are they here? If you ever confront a sea corpse nibbler their defense is stating "I'm a vegetarian...I eat fish" Riight, that really doesn't follow logical sense. Just 'cause you SAY you're vegetarian doesn't make it true 'til you stop eating meat.
And you know what else grinds my gears? people who "care" about animal rights with snakes. Firstly, a snake is a wild animal damn it. Even if raised by humans from the egg they have all their instincts intact and can survive without problem in the wild. That means you're keeping a wild animal captive because for whatever stupid reason you use to keep them in the first place.
Secondly, what about their "food"? You cause so much pain and suffering for the sake of one luxury animal.
1. Rats and mice are domesticated animals. You are placing an animal bred to trust humans and have their base instincts removed into a glass box with a wild animal. d---.
2. Rodent mills aren't nice. Treated like trash they are bred like crazy with no breaks whatsoever. Lucky to see the light of day, trapped in their own filth, panic is everyday life for them. (And there is no difference between a "pet" and a "feeder" except the way they're treated.)
3. If you raise your own you are mercilessly killing endless animals (again for the sake of one luxury animal) (if you buy them you still are but adding the misery of mills)
4. These animals are proven to feel joy and happiness, if you ask a scientist the same thing about snakes they will tell you its impossible, This is because their brain (which we have the core of in our own brains and holds the same functions) is structured primitively.

This just flies in the face of animal rights. You say you care then you just use them and abuse them worse then the average person.

And thats the end of my anti fish rant.

`Haha that was mainly an anti-snake rant. But I agree with you to an extent. I don't eat fish, but my parents are vegetarians who only eat caught fish, not farmed fish. This is understandable to me. It makes sense for someone to be okay with eating animals, provided that they're not treated cruelly. Hell, I don't have a problem with that. It's just the way the food chain works. I'm a vegetarian because the way that animals raised for meat are treated is unforgivable.

As for the snakes, I totally agree. I think that with most people who have snakes though, it's just thoughtlessness and ignorance more than malice. Still, it's not okay.

`Haha that is a good rant orane and i completly agree with you. anyone that eats fish isnt a vegetarian because fish is meat. weather that fish was farmed or caught in the wild, either isnt right though a wild one would technicly be more ethical. but if you care why not just eat some vegetables instead? annaseptic is right that only eating caught fish is better than farrmed fish, but i wouldnt go as far to say its acceptable or understandable... unless you are starving on a deserted island with a volleyball named wilson... then the food chain argument might have validity.

As for snakes i couldnt agree more, no one should have a pet snake, or any wild animal for a pet. Even if you do want a pet you should make sure that its a rescued pet and not a bred pet. Even if you have a cat and feed it meat, thats sort of like having a snake and feeding it a mouse on a cruelty level. its just not as direct because the canned meat has already been killed for you. you should seek out vegan pet food but that can also be hard because its hard to find, expencive, and somtimes your pet wont eat it.

`In my reasons for being vegetarian, eating caught fish is not more ethical than farmed fish. Most of the world's fisheries are in serious decline due to overfishing, which is the REAL reason you periodically see a new species come on the market that wasn't there before. To someone like me, whose vegetarianism is for environmental reasons, neither caught fish nor farmed fish make sense.

And as for vegan pet food, that can work with dogs, but as far as I know, not with cats. Cats' physiology is designed for an almost purely carnivorous diet, unlike the dog which is more of an omnivore.

What a great thread. I agree with everything. Fish and other sea creatures are just as deserving of our compassion as land animals. I could never claim that I love all animals if I was eating fish or any other sea creature. All animals are beautiful, precious and brave in their own way. I also agree that it is unethical to keep most animals as pets except in cases where returning an animal to the wild would be against its best interests and there are some cases like that which pop up on occasion. I have a dog and the thing that makes them such wonderful pets, besides the fact they are so cute, intelligent and noble, is the fact that they are capable of not only surviving but actually thriving on a vegetarialmost vegan diet. It is wonderful to have an animal friend and know that you can care for it without having to harm other creatures in order to do so.
