We are subsidizing the meat eaters

We are all taxpayers, I presume. Well, part of Uncle Sam's budget (read: our tax dollars) goes to farm subsidies that support the meat industry. Why do we stand for this? I stopped buying beef many years ago because of the anti-wildlife attitude of the cattle industry (kill all the varmints! any critter on the range other than cattle is a varmint!); but what good is that decision if I am still forced to help pay for beef that other people buy?

I say, let those consumers who choose to eat meat bear the full cost. Maybe that will produce the incidental benefit of motivating them to eat healthier by eating less meat. Why should we be required to spend our money on something we strongly oppose, that is harming people and the earth? What's next, tobacco subsidies?

Here's hoping for a world where it is safe to be a wolf, or a prairie dog.
