I have been a vegetarian since I was twelve years old. My general philosophy is that human beings are an evolved species (and I don't want to hear any of that 'descent of man' crap). We have a more profound understanding than other animals. We are different in our unlimited source of knowledge and intellectual growth. We have the capacity to understand right and wrong - the concepts of "life" and "death". We should therefore learn to behave less cruelly when it can be avoided.
If human beings could not live a healthy life without eating meat, I would be much more understanding. However, that is not the case. We have plenty of alternate sources of nutrition.
