Does anyone use dietary supplements to fill the void as far as vitamins and nutrients they may be missing in the vegetarian diet?

I use a product called 'Veg 1' : multivitamin, crunchable tablets. I get them from the Vegan Society website, 180 once a day for £12.99 inc. postage. They provide at least the minimum recommended daily amounts for vitamins D, B12, B6 and B2, and minerals Iodine, Folic Acid and Selenium. I find that I don't spend much time outside getting vitamin D from sunlight so decided I needed to take a supplement, and I don't eat much food that is fortified with vitamin B12 - there's no other way to get it in a vegetarian/vegan diet. I also have prescribed iron tablets for anaemia but they are not vegetarian as they contain gelatine - I'm going to ask my doctor to prescribe a vegetarian one.

`I generally do not use supplements; but then, I'm lacto-ovo-vegetarian, not vegan.

I listen to a health guru/enthusiast and he says that humans can only digest plant based nutrients. our bodies cannot use minerals that come straight out of the ground without first being processed by plants. The average human body will manufacture most of the stuff it needs and is not getting from the stuff you are getting so long as that material you are getting is capable of being manufactured into one of the nutrients you are not getting. I recommend that you just eat a wide range of fruits, veggies, Legumes, roots and make sure that its organic. Organic seems to last longer in the fridge and the idea is that it lacks pesticides and herbicides and is grown in a sustainable and nutrient rich environment. Most factory farmed foods are depleted of the nutrients that make it the food item it is supposed to be. If you are worried about your intake of nutrients; you can get a hair *nalysis. Then seek out the vegetable/ fruit that is known to provide that nutrient. I heard that seaweed is good for Iodine and that humans need more Iodine than is readily available in our supplemented salt. Scientists have discovered more; previously unknown receptors for Iodine. Its hard to find seaweed around here; but eventually I will and then I will get all caught up on that nutrient. Good luck in your endeavors
